I realize this is the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but I will
do this anyway.
Let us go through some passages that give us reason that we must
be thankful.
2 Samuel 22:47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and
exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. 48 It is God that
avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me, 49 And
that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted
me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered
me from the violent man. 50 Therefore I will give thanks unto
thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto
thy name. 51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth
mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
Though this David speaking at the end of his life in his unique
situation as king, it still applies to us.
1) Thanks for his salvation.2) God avengeth his elect, for vengence
is mine, saith the Lord.3) He is a tower of salvation.
1 Chronicles 16:8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the people. 9 Sing unto him, sing psalms
unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
1) His deeds among the people, and his wondrous works.
1 Chronicles 16:34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalms 103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. 14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
1) Thank the Lord for his mercy, for he does not deal with
us according to what we deserve.
Psalms 97:12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks
at the remembrance of his holiness.
1) For his holiness
Psalms 107:1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for
his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say
so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 3 And gathered
them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from
the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness
in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. 5 Hungry and
thirsty, their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried unto the
LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to
a city of habitation. 8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for
his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul
with goodness.
1) Redeemed from the enemy, our own selves.2) Called us to himself
from where in the world we were scattered.3) Delivers out of faintness,
distresses (plural).4) Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger
and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
The reason many people remain "hungry" is because they
hunger and thirst after the wrong things.
Psalms 118:1 ¶ O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good:
because his mercy endureth for ever.2 Let Israel now say, that
his mercy endureth for ever.3 Let the house of Aaron now say,
that his mercy endureth for ever.4 Let them now that fear the
LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.5 I called upon the
LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large
place.6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man
do unto me?7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore
shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.8 It is better to
trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.9 It is better
to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
Thank the Lord that we do not need to fear men.
